Welcome to my blog. My name is Lizzie and this is a diary of my Mums dementia, the people who I mention in my entries are John my husband, Michael my brother, Teresa my sister and Dib and Daph who are mums brother and sister-in-law.... It has been a hard struggle and I have written a diary all through every step of her progress deeper into the illness.

Saturday 1st January - Friday 14th January 2011

Saturday 1st June 2011

Michael phoned to say mum had been really good when he went in to see her today, she was sitting with Betty and she said to him 'This is my friend'.

Thursday 6th January

Got into at 10.30am, found her at the end of her corridor trying to open all the doors, Peggy (the aggressive lady) was peeping out of her door, mum was really pleased to see us, she pointed to Peggy and said 'her' in a very angry voice, don't know what had happened. We took her to her room and she calmed down.  She said that she wanted to go to the loo, I told her I would get someone to help and and she said 'No, you can help me'.  Daphne (care manager) came in and I told her that I had taken mum to the toilet, she got a bit cross and said that they were having to monitor mums 'movements' .

Her mattress still hadn't been changed back she still had the pressure mattress on but not plugged in, her leg was still bandaged, her right leg was swollen and we were told that was because she wont sleep in her bed for very long, she prefers to sleep in her chair.

I put a quilt cover on her duvet as they told me that mum had spilled a cup of tea over it this morning and they had to strip her bed, I found out this couldn't have been so, as I found her two covers in her drawer!! she said to us that 'They are not looking after me'  ..She told us that she had seen dad for 10 minutes, we think that she may have meant that she had seen Michael, we both felt that we wanted to scoop her up and take her home with us.  She said that she hadn't seen anyone.  John got a bit upset about the way she was, he managed to to get her to have a little laugh a few times.

Cynthia came along and asked mum if she would like to go along and make some cakes with all the others ladies in the dining room, she said that she didn't want to but we encouraged her to go along, we couldn't find her zimmer frame, (Mervyn had put it in the wrong room) she refused to use the zimmer frame and walked along the corridor holding onto the railings along the wall, we got her to mix up the sponge mixture and then Teresa, Katie and  Amelie came in, she was pleased to see them but didn't know who they were, they stayed for about 40 minutes, when mums lunch came I cut it up for her, she had a cheese omelette that they made especially for her, she ate it all.  We told her we had to go, she said you will come back wont you, and we said that we would be back after she has had her lunch.

Friday 7th January

Phoned and spoke to Daphne I said that we were worried about mum, she said that she was very confused this morning, she had slept most of night in the lounge.  I told her that we were worried that she wasn't sleeping in her bed, she said that mum starts off in her bed and then goes into the lounge.

Daphne said that the sore on her heel is healing nicely so I said that she would be back in her old bed with the old mattress as she that 'eventually' she would be, she said that mum didn't want any breakfast and then went into the dining room and ate Enrikas, she had eaten her lunch of fish and chips and then rice pudding for dessert.

I spoke to mum, she seemed fine but confused.  Daphne said that she was going to the hairdressers later and I heard mum said 'Oh bloody hell, am I'

Monday 10th January

Daph took mums friends Bett, Jean and Ann in to see her, she said that mum was really pleased to see them all and although she couldn't remember their names she knew them.

Wednesday 12th January

Phoned to see how mum was and they told me that she was good and had eaten her breakfast and lunch and was walking around really well.

Friday 14th January

Teresa was with mum when we got there, they were sitting at the front outside the dining room , mum looked really well and was very chirpy.  Teresa said that she had a' little tear'  as mum had said to her that they are very nice (meaning the staff) but it's not her family.

Mums feet are really swollen, Tina went and got her a stool from her room, we tried to get her to sit with her feet up but she kept crossing her feet and we kept telling her to uncross them.  It was a good visit today, we left her in the dining room having her lunch.
