Welcome to my blog. My name is Lizzie and this is a diary of my Mums dementia, the people who I mention in my entries are John my husband, Michael my brother, Teresa my sister and Dib and Daph who are mums brother and sister-in-law.... It has been a hard struggle and I have written a diary all through every step of her progress deeper into the illness.

Monday 6th June - Monday 27th June..Mum getting very depressed

Monday 6th June 2011

We decided to go in and see mum, when we arrived she was looking out of the window, we asked her if she saw us coming and she said that she likes to see if anyone is coming in to see her, we also took Herbie (the dog) to see her today, they were both pleased to see each other, we sat in the lounge and Herbie sat on her lap.

Mum told me that she felt 'bloody awful' today, when I asked if it was because she didn't feel well, she said that 'no' she didn't and that she could come and live with us, I told her that it wouldn't be allowed, she asked why not, I didn't know what to say, If I could I would have brought her home to look after her but I know that I wouldn't be able to manage.

She talked a lot but not a lot made sense but she seemed happy in her own way.  We took her into the dining room where all the other ladies made a fuss of Herbie, it is nice to see some of the ones who don't usually talk, smile when they saw Herbie

We left her at 12, just as as they were going to have their lunch.

Friday 10th June

Charley went in to see mum today, he said that she was pleased to see him, he took her some chocolates and her face lit up when she saw them, she asked him if we were all OK and he reassured her that we were.

Monday 13th June

Mum was in the lounge on her own when we got to the home, she was pleased to see us and told the carer that we were her mum and dad, I said 'no' mum, I am your daughter, she looked at JJ and said well who are you then!.  She talked no stop, not a lot we understood, she looked well and happy.

Tuesday 14th June

Daph Mary (mums sister) and Auntie Maureen went in to see mum today, Mary phoned in the evening to say that she was disgusted with mums toenails and thinks that she has a fungal infection on her toe, she said that she had words with Tina and asked her to put mums name down to see the chiropodist next time he is in the home, he is due in the next couple of days and visits the home every 6 weeks, Mary said that she didn't think that was enough but I told her that was how often I took mum to help the aged foot clinic. (the staff are not allowed to cut the residents toenails)

Wednesday 15th June

Phoned and talked to Tina about Mary asking for mum to see the chiropodist and she said that mum was down to see him when he comes in, I ask if she could see if mum could see him every 6 weeks and she assured me that she was in the book to see him every time he comes in.

Sunday 19th June

Teresa phoned to say that she had been into see mum on Friday and with Michael today and she told me that mum had been out on an outing on Thursday.

She was very tearful and Jasmine said that she had another UTI, also Tina said that they thought that she was depressed and she is down to see the doctor next time he comes in.

They took her to the Outlet Centre and she enjoyed looking at all the shops and people walking by.

Monday 20th June

We managed to talk to Tina on the way in to see mum, I asked if mum had seen the doctor, she said that he doesn't go in until tomorrow and mum was on the list to see him.  She said that mum gets very tearful as she thinks that no one has been in to see her, she will forget that we have been in by this afternoon.  I asked if it was the next stage of the illness and she said that it was, she suggested that we read everything we can about Dementia as it goes through many different stages.  Mum could get aggressive, which she has shown signs of doing, she threw a glass of water at Tina when she didn't get her attention, mum does like to have their full attention, we told Tina that she has always been a bit like that and likes to have lots of praise given to her, she said that they do try and do that but like most people with dementia mums mood can change in a couple of minutes.  Tina told us that everyone deals with this in their own way i.e.children and family of the person with dementia. She said that for instance, if I got cross with her and shouted at her, mum would have forgotten about it it in a few minutes and it would be me that felt bad, It was good to have a chat with Tina.

Mum was sitting by the desk she was very happy to see us and had a few tears, she said that she keeps crying and when JJ said to her 'whys that Annie' she said that she thought that she had gone, I asked her where she thought that she had gone and mum pointed to the ceiling, JJ made a joke and said that she wasn't going up there she was going down there and she laughed, we managed to make her laugh quite a lot during the visit.  She tried to tell us about going to the shops with Micheal and Teresa yesterday, she got cross a few times when she couldn't think of the right words.

She hinted about coming to our house but we had to explain that it was too far and that she didn't enjoy the journey last time she came and that it would be best to go out for a cup of tea and a cake somewhere, she didn't seem very impressed with that idea, we took her into the dining room to have her lunch.

Daphne mentioned that mums slippers were too tight although mum said that it was her teeth! Mum does like to listen to any conversation that going on and Jenny the cleaner said that she calls her Mrs Nosy.

Thursday 23rd June

I phoned and spoke to Daphne regarding mum seeing the doctor she said that mum had been put on Floroxide which is an anti depressant, it will take about 2 months to take full effect, she said that mum had been fine yesterday and today.

Monday 27th June

We took some cakes and drinks in so that we could sit out in the garden, It was a beautiful day, mum talked a lot and said that she was so glad that we had gone in to see her, it was strange because she suddenly said that she was different and  did we think so too, I asked her in what way was she different and she that she was nasty sometimes.   I told her that she couldn't help it and in what way did she think that she was nasty and she said that she says things and when I asked her what she said I say 'arse holes', we did have to laugh and so did she, she also said that she thought that she was on her 'last legs' and didn't think that she would go to work any more!.

We sat outside for nearly 2 hours, when we took her back in she decided that she wanted to have a nap in the lounge, we told her that we would see her later.  We had a word with Tina on the way out and she said that it is very frustrating for mum as she knows that she is changing but she doesn't understand why, her verbal skills are not very good so she can't get out what she wants to say.
