Welcome to my blog. My name is Lizzie and this is a diary of my Mums dementia, the people who I mention in my entries are John my husband, Michael my brother, Teresa my sister and Dib and Daph who are mums brother and sister-in-law.... It has been a hard struggle and I have written a diary all through every step of her progress deeper into the illness.

Home reopens after being closed for 3 weeks... Tuesday 1st March - Wednesday 16th March 2011

Tuesday 1st March 2011

The care home reopened today as they were now bug free, mum had gone upstairs at the hairdressers to have her hair done so we went up to see her, she was really confused that we were there with her and wondered how we had got there, the hairdresser hadn't started her hair so we took mum out to the upstairs dining room for a chat, mum was really crabby and asked us where we had been and why we hadn't been into see her, I tried to explain about not being able to go in because of the bug and that NO visitors were allowed, I told her that the home had allowed me to see her for a short time last Thursday but she had forgotten that completely, she said that she thought that she was going to die, we think that perhaps that may be because she hadn't seen anyone for such a long time.

While mum had her hair done we went off to get a coffee at Costa coffee shop, when we got back she was in the dining room, she said 'where have you been' so she had remembered we had been in earlier. John had taken some coloured juggling balls in with him and asked mum if she could tell him the colours but she couldn't remember any of them.   We stayed with her until they served lunch. John asked her when was she going to come to our house, she pointed at me and said 'when SHE says so'!!! So John asked her if she would like to come to lunch on Sunday, her face lit up, so when we left her she was happy.

I phoned Daph in the evening, she said that Michael had told Peter that he had been into see her on Saturday and that mum had passed wind very loudly and said 'Christ I s**t myself ' (Oh dear, mum what are we going to do with you!!)

Sunday 6th March

We picked mum up at 10am, she was sitting out the front waiting for us, Karen said that she had been a bit tearful this morning, on the way home she had told John that she kept crying but she didn't know why and that it was not like her, she was fine when we got her home she had a slice of Matts birthday cake and a cup of tea, she told us that  it was her birthday today!, she said that Michael hadn't visited her but I knew that he had, I phoned Linda to ask if she had been tearful yesterday, she said that she had been fine, no tears at all, she must just be having an off day.

Matt, Kerrie, Laura and John came to lunch too and mum was really happy to see them all, she did have trouble remembering their names, she ate all her lunch and some of mine too. She dozed on and off during the day, she said that she didn't think that she would go back and that she would stay here, she told John that she was really sorry for being a nuisance.  We played a couple of games of cards with her until she said that she didn't want to play anymore.

Her leg was really red  and her left ankle was swollen, I rubbed some E45 cream into her leg, I got her to take the E45 cream back with her.

She said some really confusing things while she was here, when I said that she was confused she said that, 'yes she was' and that she was like it all the time now.

We took her home about 5ish and she was happy to go back in, Tina asked her if she had a nice time and she said 'No, not really' and one of the other asked the same thing an she said ' I didn't go for a good time'
She seemed to buck up as soon as she got back and didn't look so pale, I think that she may be suffering with travel sickness.

When we left we told her that we would see her again on Wednesday, I think that not seeing anyone when the home was close really upset her more that we realised.

Monday 7th March

Daph, Dib and Hilda went into see mum, Daph said that she was still very weepy and that she couldn't remember her name, she told Daph that she had been here but also said that she had been here for 3 days.

Wednesday 9th March

Mum wasn't so tearful today, she told us that she was pleased to see us, she was as Daphne says 'happily confused' She said that she had been out and I said, that's right you came to us for the day, she said, did I, I didn't think that it was your house that I went to, she also said that she had been out and upstairs, we couldn't really understand where she meant she had been, she thought that she was going out with us again today, we had to tell her that we couldn't take her out as we were busy today, she looked at me and said 'Oh yes, you always say that', she turned to John and asked if he was working, he said no he wasn't, she looked back at me and said, well he will take me out.  I told her that Michael might take her out when he visits next Saturday, she replied 'Huh, he might do'

We had a walk down to her room she was very stiff but much better when we walked back to the dining room, we stayed until they were getting ready for lunch, all in all she was much better today.

Saturday 12th March

Teresa phoned, she said that mum was very weepy, she couldn't remember who Teresa was, (she had been away for a couple of months in Australia) when she spoke to mum and told her who she was mum said 'Oh yes, how is Lissa'. she then said that she thought that Teresa had been washed away! We think that she must have been watching the news on the TV about the tsunami in Japan.

She said that mums toenails were very long and needed cutting I told her that I had asked twice about them being cut and that I would ask again on Wednesday.

Wednesday 16th March

We got into mum earlier that usual, she was sitting in a chair by the computer, her face lit up when she saw John and said, 'where did you come from', she was very weepy again, she kept on saying that she was really wild with someone and that she was cross, she said that she had told them that, OK, she wouldn't say anything then..she mentioned something about me and that she wasn't having that, as I was always there, then she said something about Michael.  I asked Tina if she fallen out with anyone as she was upset, Tina said not that she knew about.

Tina told us that mum had flashed her boobs when she was in the dining room, she had undone her blouse and lifted her vest, I think that she may have been looking for her handkerchief, Tina said that John, one of the other residents, was sitting opposite mum, poor man.. mum told Tina that it didn't matter.

We got her to walk back to her room, she wasn't keen but we took her anyway, her teeth were on the floor of her room so I picked them up and went to put them in her bathroom and there was a strange lady sitting on mums loo.. I went and got Jessy the carer and she sorted her out, Mum said come on, let's get out of here!

We got waylaid by a new resident called Jessica, she talked and talked, I think that she will get on mums nerves as mum was a bit restless around her.  We took mum into the dining room and sat round the table with the other ladies when it was time for us to leave she wanted to go back to the chair where she was when we first came in.

I got Tina to add mum to the chiropodist list to have her nails cut, he was coming  in this afternoon,  Tina said that mum had deteriorated but they did still managed to get her to have a laugh..

I felt like I was in a comedy show today, very surreal.

The start of the Norovirus bug ....Wednesday 2nd February - Thursday 24th February 2011

Wednesday 2nd February 2011

Phoned to see how mum was as we hadn't been into see mum because of having a sickness bug, I spoke to Daphne and she said that mum was very well and that her heel had completely healed up and her legs were a lot better, she told me that Michael had been in on Saturday and that Daph and Dib had been in on Sunday

Friday 4th February

Mum was really well bit tearful when we got there, she looked really well and had just had her hair done, she was very happy and her legs looked a lot better, her heel had cleared up, she said some really funny things which kept us amused, she couldn't remember my name so called me 'The little 'un )

Wednesday 9th February

Mary phoned to say that they (Daph and her) had been into see mum and she was asleep in the chair at the end of the corridor.  She had a tummy upset and she also said that the pink slippers that mum had on were too tight and she needed new ones, I told her she didn't have any pink slippers, so they must belong to someone else, they also asked that the chiropodist sees her the next time he comes in as she needs her toenails cut.

Thursday 10th February

Mum was in the dining room, she looked and was really well, I had picked up the other new pair of slippers that Teresa had ordered for her from Tenterden, her other new pair were in her room when we got there but she still had the old pink pair on, so I took them off her and gave them to the cleaner to get rid of.  Mum said ' I may as well come with you' and I had to say to her 'not today mum' she looked at me and said 'you always say that' which made me feel bad, so John asked her if she would like to come home with us for a little visit, her face lit up and she said 'yes please'  I went and saw Jessy, the carer in charge if it was Ok and she said that it was fine.

Mum thought that it took a long time to get here. I phoned Michael and he and Pete came in to see her while she was here, she really enjoyed being here but asked to go home after she had been here about 2 hours.  It was nice that she referred to the care home as her home. She looked really tired when we got her back, she saw Karen and said 'I've been out' they were all just going to play bingo so she happily went with Karen to play bingo with them all.

Sunday 13th February

Daphne phoned to say that the care home was closed due to what they think is the winter sickness bug Norovirus, she thinks that it will only be for 24 hours

Wednesday 16th February

I phoned the care home and Daphne said the it was still closed to all visitors as the bug had been confirmed as the Norovirus.

Daphne said that mum was fine, she said to phone before thinking of going in.  I text Michael and past the information onto him.

Sunday 20th February

Care home still closed the decision will be made tomorrow when it will be reopened, I said that we would probably come in on Tuesday but will phone before we go in.

Monday 21st February

Daph phoned to say that the home was still closed, we can go in if we wear the supplied aprons and gloves I said that I would phone tomorrow (Tuesday).

Tuesday 22nd February

Phoned the care home and spoke to Daphne they are still not open to visitors, she said that mum was really sleepy today but she was virus free, I said that I would phone on Thursday and it all is OK I would go in and see mum.

Thursday 24th February

I spoke to Tina at the care home and she said that they were still not clear of the virus, I told her that I was really worried about mum and that she would think that she has been abandoned by us all and I would like to come in and see her, she said that she would have a word with  Salome the head care manager..  Tina got back to me and said that Salome had said that if I go in and put on the apron, spray my hands with the gel, wear gloves and be sprayed I could go in for a little while.

Mum was so pleased to see me,(John stayed out in the car) she asked me where John was as she said that he always makes her laugh, she asked me if we had fallen out..I told her that, no we hadn't fallen out and told her he would come in next time, I tried to explain about the virus but she couldn't grasp what I was talking about.

I asked mum if she was sleeping in her bed and she that No, I asked her why she wasn't and she said that she liked it at first but now she doesn't, she said that thought that she wasn't here anymore and that she had gone!

I got Karen to rub cream into her legs as they were very flaky, I stayed for about an hour and she seemed quite happy for me to go. I left her sitting in the lounge with Violet, another of the lady residence

Tuesday 18th January - Wednesday 26th January

Tuesday 18th January 2011

Daph and Mary both phoned to say that they had been into see mum today, she was having her hair permed, so they stayed upstairs with her (Daph, Dib, Mary and Bev all went in) they said that she was in good spirits but they were both worried about her swollen legs and ankles.

Wednesday 19th January

I phoned the care home and spoke to Tina, she said that mum was well and walking with her stick today and not her zimmer frame, I asked her about mums swollen legs/ankles, she said that it was because mum was walking around to much and not resting them.. I asked Tina if the doctor was coming in tomorrow, I heard Daphne say to Tina, are you talking about Annie,  I spoke to Daphne and she said that the doctor was seeing mum tomorrow.

Friday 21st January

We took Bett in with us today, mum looked really well she had actually got her teeth in!!..she was walking with her stick instead of her zimmer frame, they had to take the zimmer frame away as she had thought it was a chair and had tried to sit down on it.  She is walking well with her stick, the doctor saw her yesterday and said that the spots on her legs are not cellulitis he had given  her some tablet , Daphne was not sure what they are at the moment.  Daphne was not on duty yesterday so didn't see the doctor and the prescriptions hadn't been delivered yet from the chemist.  Her legs didn't look so 'shiny' today but her feet are still swollen, she had a stretchy bandage on which should be holding the foam on her heel, she had the bandage over her knee!!!

She enjoyed seeing Bett, it was a good visit again.

She does get a bit teary eyed when you first go in but soon gets over it

Wednesday 26th January

Mum was asleep in the chair outside the dining room, she was pleased to see us  and we stayed for a couple of hours, her legs are swollen again.  Daphne said we must wait for the pills to start working.

She was very happy today and laughed a lot, she said to Mervyn 'This is my family'. We noticed that she is having trouble walking again today. She still isn't sleeping in her bed.

While we were there she wanted to go to the loo and when she came out she was surprised to see us she had completely forgotten we were there and thought we had just arrived.

Saturday 1st January - Friday 14th January 2011

Saturday 1st June 2011

Michael phoned to say mum had been really good when he went in to see her today, she was sitting with Betty and she said to him 'This is my friend'.

Thursday 6th January

Got into at 10.30am, found her at the end of her corridor trying to open all the doors, Peggy (the aggressive lady) was peeping out of her door, mum was really pleased to see us, she pointed to Peggy and said 'her' in a very angry voice, don't know what had happened. We took her to her room and she calmed down.  She said that she wanted to go to the loo, I told her I would get someone to help and and she said 'No, you can help me'.  Daphne (care manager) came in and I told her that I had taken mum to the toilet, she got a bit cross and said that they were having to monitor mums 'movements' .

Her mattress still hadn't been changed back she still had the pressure mattress on but not plugged in, her leg was still bandaged, her right leg was swollen and we were told that was because she wont sleep in her bed for very long, she prefers to sleep in her chair.

I put a quilt cover on her duvet as they told me that mum had spilled a cup of tea over it this morning and they had to strip her bed, I found out this couldn't have been so, as I found her two covers in her drawer!! she said to us that 'They are not looking after me'  ..She told us that she had seen dad for 10 minutes, we think that she may have meant that she had seen Michael, we both felt that we wanted to scoop her up and take her home with us.  She said that she hadn't seen anyone.  John got a bit upset about the way she was, he managed to to get her to have a little laugh a few times.

Cynthia came along and asked mum if she would like to go along and make some cakes with all the others ladies in the dining room, she said that she didn't want to but we encouraged her to go along, we couldn't find her zimmer frame, (Mervyn had put it in the wrong room) she refused to use the zimmer frame and walked along the corridor holding onto the railings along the wall, we got her to mix up the sponge mixture and then Teresa, Katie and  Amelie came in, she was pleased to see them but didn't know who they were, they stayed for about 40 minutes, when mums lunch came I cut it up for her, she had a cheese omelette that they made especially for her, she ate it all.  We told her we had to go, she said you will come back wont you, and we said that we would be back after she has had her lunch.

Friday 7th January

Phoned and spoke to Daphne I said that we were worried about mum, she said that she was very confused this morning, she had slept most of night in the lounge.  I told her that we were worried that she wasn't sleeping in her bed, she said that mum starts off in her bed and then goes into the lounge.

Daphne said that the sore on her heel is healing nicely so I said that she would be back in her old bed with the old mattress as she that 'eventually' she would be, she said that mum didn't want any breakfast and then went into the dining room and ate Enrikas, she had eaten her lunch of fish and chips and then rice pudding for dessert.

I spoke to mum, she seemed fine but confused.  Daphne said that she was going to the hairdressers later and I heard mum said 'Oh bloody hell, am I'

Monday 10th January

Daph took mums friends Bett, Jean and Ann in to see her, she said that mum was really pleased to see them all and although she couldn't remember their names she knew them.

Wednesday 12th January

Phoned to see how mum was and they told me that she was good and had eaten her breakfast and lunch and was walking around really well.

Friday 14th January

Teresa was with mum when we got there, they were sitting at the front outside the dining room , mum looked really well and was very chirpy.  Teresa said that she had a' little tear'  as mum had said to her that they are very nice (meaning the staff) but it's not her family.

Mums feet are really swollen, Tina went and got her a stool from her room, we tried to get her to sit with her feet up but she kept crossing her feet and we kept telling her to uncross them.  It was a good visit today, we left her in the dining room having her lunch.
